In 2014, Matthew’s life became a daily battle when he was diagnosed with leukemia. At just the age of 15, Matthew would sometimes have to go undergo daily treatments, forcing him to change his daily routine.
Growing up, he was surrounded with sports. With many of his family members being huge football fans, his love for the game began to grow. At 4 years old, he attended his first football game and since then, has always loved watching football games with his father and brother-in-law.
Like many football fans, Matthew’s most heartfelt wish has always been to go to the Super Bowl, the ultimate NFL championship game that every fan dreams of attending one day.
With the help of the Los Angeles Chargers, Matthew’s wish came true in 2018 when he received tickets to Super Bowl 52, courtesy of Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward.
“To give it to (someone like that) and someone who wanted to go (meant a lot),” Hayward said in an interview with Chargers.com. “(Matthew) really wanted to go to the game and I hope he enjoys it.”
In February of 2018, Matthew, along with his father, sister and brother-in-law headed out to Minneapolis and joined several other Make-A-Wish children and families for a weekend filled of activities leading up to the big game at the U.S. Bank Stadium.
During their weekend, they toured the hosting stadium and visited the press box, locker rooms and even took photos on the stadium field! Another stop on their trip included a visit to the Super Bowl Experience, the NFL’s interactive theme park, where NFL players and Hall of Famers stopped by to say hello, take photos and sign autographs. He even had the chance to see the Lombardi Trophy and take photos!
Finally, Super Bowl Sunday arrived and Matthew could not contain his excitement. The experience was not only one that he’ll never forget, but the game was one of the most exciting games he’s ever watched!
“It was one of those games where you’re on the edge of your seat until the last second,” Matthew told the Daily Pilot.
Today, Matthew is cancer-free. He's a college student with an interest in computer science. His wish come true was one that he and his family will never forget. The entire experience was more than he could have ever imagined.
“I was going on this trip expecting, ‘Here’s your ticket; we’ll take you to the game, have fun,’” Matthew said in an interview with the Daily Pilot. “But it was an experience beyond experiences.”
Thank you to the Los Angeles Chargers for helping us make his one true wish a reality.
