I wish to be a veterinarian

Nominee has seen a lot of doctors this year.

The 5-year-old girl, who loves playing with her dogs and the color pink, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in September 2013. Nominee’s treatment has included numerous tests and procedures such as weekly chemotherapy and monthly spinal taps. When she met with volunteers from Make-A-Wish, Nominee wished to fulfill her dream of becoming a veterinarian.

Finally, it was Nominee’s turn to be the doctor.

“When we heard that Nominee has been aspiring to be a veterinarian for the last several years, even practicing her skills on her family pets, we just knew she’d fit right in with our Orange County team of veterinary specialists and surgeons,” said John MacFadyen, Hospital Director and COO of Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group. “We were honored to welcome her as the VMSG Veterinarian for a Day!”

On the day of her wish, Nominee arrived at the Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group where Make-A-Wish volunteers presented her with a lab coat, a clipboard and a pink stethoscope that matched her sparkly shoes. Nominee put on her new medical gear, took a tour of the hospital and got right to work. She started examining cats and dogs by checking their ears, looking at their paws and listening to their hearts.

After performing routine check-ups, Nominee moved on to surgical procedures. She helped shave a puppy to prepare for an operation, assisted with an ultrasound and even removed stitches from a dog that had previously undergone surgery.

Nominee’s mom Silvia said that her daughter’s kindness towards the animals mirrored how Nominee’s doctors and nurses had cared for her during her nine months of treatment.

“Nominee wanted to treat her beloved pets with the same care and compassion she experienced,” Silvia said.

By the end of the day, “Dr.” Nominee was walking around the hospital like a professional, responding to her name being paged over the PA system and rushing off to greet her next four-legged patient.

Nominee said that her wish made her happy and she hopes to become a veterinarian when she grows up. When asked what her favorite part of her day was, she smiled and said, “removing the stitches.”
