Photos take us to places we’ve never been and moments we wish we could share.
Thomas, 15, grew up with a bedroom covered in posters of warm beaches and he constantly flipped through his mother’s scrapbook of her trip to Hawaii as a teenager. It was no surprise that when Make-A-Wish came to him, he knew exactly what he wanted! He wished to go to Hawaii with his family, so they could share memories together on the island surrounded by beautiful, warm water beaches.
In 2009, Thomas was diagnosed with end stage renal disease, which put a halt on his blue water dreams. However, this never stopped him from craving the scenic adventures of Hawaii.
On arrival, the first thing he wanted to do was jump in the water. “He’d never been anywhere with warm water,” said Thomas’ mother Chetera, “he said it felt like taking a bath.” The north shore waters were so soothing to him, at times he would go so far out into the ocean, making his mother extremely nervous!
His journey was filled with moments that his family will constantly reminisce about and always remember. But the activity that Thomas was most thrilled about, was his helicopter tour over the Ali`i Sacred Falls. Thomas had never been anywhere outside of California and to be taking a helicopter ride over the island he’d always dreamed of visiting was a moment he’ll never forget.
Exploring Hawaii was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Thomas to share with his family. He had so much fun exploring the island and taking photos that he can now hang up next to his posters to remember his amazing wish!
