A dream is a wish your heart makes… and for 4-year-old Audrey, it was to visit Aulani®, a Disney Resort & Spa with her family.
Diagnosed in May of 2013 with a form of leukemia and everything changed.
“During Audrey’s treatment there were many days, weeks and months we felt completely powerless,” said her father Aaron. “She was fighting for her life and we were left on the sidelines hanging on every test result.”
Although times were tough, family and friends kept their spirits high and were there every step of the way.
For Audrey, keeping her spirits high meant thinking of fun in the sun, waterslides and her favorite Disney characters.
Then, Make-A-Wish volunteers stepped in.
“It’s completely humbling and impossible not to drop to our knees in appreciation when complete strangers come alongside our family and link arms with us in support of our daughter,” said Aaron of Audrey’s wish granters.
After some discussion, it was no surprise that Audrey, a lover of all things water and Disney, wished to go to Aulani. Although, this experience was more than just a vacation, it was a celebration of completing treatment and a fresh start.
Audrey’s wish was revealed in true princess style, a crown and Mickey Mouse balloons by her side. Although, this little princess wanted to keep her cool.
“I’m really excited about going to Hawaii,” she said. “Because it’s my wish!”
The morning her wish was set to begin, the reality set in. Audrey and her family were picked up in a limo and taken to the airport to begin their adventure.
Dad, Aaron, recalls the trip:
“This wish transported Audrey to a fantasy land, her dream come true. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, Audrey could hardly contain herself. With the exception of bedtime, I don’t remember many moments where she wasn’t beaming. Every day felt like a magical marathon of all her favorite activities; pools, waterslide, Goofy, Minnie, Mickey, the beach, the ocean, sand castles, warm pools, lazy river, water park, shaved ice, repeat. She was completely energized every single day with no room for naps or down time, it was nonstop fun.”
Audrey’s wish to go to Aulani was a memorable experience for all who joined her as she explored the island of Hawaii. Now, with a renewed energy, Audrey and her family look toward the future and are excited for what lies ahead.
